Alberta Fire Code Compliance

If you have a business in the City of Calgary that needs a life safety system, such as a monitored fire alarm, you are responsible for ensuring that the system complies with the Alberta Fire Code and other regulations.

Recently, the City of Calgary laid 65 charges against the life safety system provider Premium Fire Protection Ltd. and 15 charges against several of its clients. This is the first time the city has laid these types of charges, but I doubt it will be the last. (Learn more about this incident on the City of Calgary's website.)

The fines for these types of violations can be up to $100,000 for a first offense to $500,000 for subsequent offenses. So it's very important that you comply with these regulations.

Leaving it in the hands of your service provider isn't an option either. Paul Frank, a prosecutor for the City of Calgary, puts it this way: "We want to remind the businesses retaining services that it is their responsibility to verify that life safety system installers and inspectors are qualified and certified." You need to make sure that your service provider is licensed to work in Calgary and certified and qualified to work on these systems.
